ヴィジュアル系Visual kei

Origin/JapanCountry

A style out of Japanese band culture in which makeup and costume construct an entire world. The term describes a mode of visual presentation, not a musical genre.

How it spread

From the late 1980s, bands led by X and BUCK-TICK brought a distinct aesthetic to the rock scene. The name is widely traced to the tagline on X JAPAN's BLUE BLOOD — 'PSYCHEDELIC VIOLENCE CRIME OF VISUAL SHOCK'.

How to recognise it

The 1980s ran to gothic black; the 1990s turned ornate and glittering. Striking makeup, exaggerated hair and elaborate costume are constant. Performers are mostly men, and the styling deliberately takes up feminine-coded signs.

What it costs

¥5,000–45,000. Specialist brands price high, so secondhand and live-show merchandise are the practical routes in.
